I've got a new HF collector and plan on using a Thien separator in a 30 gal. metal can along with a Wynn cartridge filter. Most of the designs I see are for a shop vac. What size fittings should I use for my can top? The HF has a 5" inlet and from what I see, my main line should be 6" (using PVC).

I'm pretty sure that if I use 4" fittings, it will mess with my CFM and velocity. Are 6" fittings commonly used?

Thanks!

After much more reading, I see many folks are saying that 6" ports on a lid is too tight to get good circulation. I'm kind of leaning towards 5" fittings. I know they're harder to find though...

Is anyone using 4" ports with good results on a HF collector? My longest run will be about 20' up, over and down to my Unisaw.

I am satisfied with 4" and my HF 2Hp DC. :)

what diameter is your lid
i have ran 6" with a 22" diameter top hat. that worked perfectly
i am now running 8" through 22" diameter and it works good. its not perfect but gets all the large dust. some of the fines get through but im venting outside so its ok.
the 8" on 22"diameter is pushing it a bit too much.

6" is ideal,
use a round to rectangular transition  and you will get away with more
