OK I made a collector from a metal garbage can with a wood "circle" under the lid and it works really well, but I wanted to use the plastic separator and bought one and installed it on the lid of the garbage can, now more than half on the shavings  go into my shop vac I was wondering are my shavings too large for the small seperator has anyone had this problem or could it be that there maybe an air leak causing this, thank you

recently shavings have been collecting on the threaded spacer rods between the cover and baffel, moving the rods closer together may help i hope, but what is the largest slot you can use for the shavings to fall through, has anyone else had this problem, it is hooked up to a planer

i will take a close up pic later and post it, once the pipe is inserted a small screw and nut is used to hold it in place

ok it took a while i wish i had more time for my stuff but, here is the collector on the cheap i used a hose from a dryer vent and an assortment of pvc adaptors, i filled the can with just 8 board feet of maple as you can see some of the shaving still get tossed out the front of the planer and i have some vacumning to do when done but i am still very have happy with the results oh yeah i almost collapsed the can when i took off the feed line an accidently plugged it, the pipe going into the can is 1 1/2  and the dryer hose is 3"  [/img][/img][/img]i don't know if these attachments came through or not so i will also email them to phil hoping he can attach them

the experiment starts this weekend, results to follow

well a 3" hose from the planer to the separator should work but the problem seems to be fittings, plumbing fittings are a thicker wall and more difficult to transition from thin wall connectors to schedule 40, but they provide a better confirguration. connecting a 45 and 90 degree elbows going into the separator would provide a smoother flow

hmmmmmm yes that is exactly what i plan to do as the 2 1/2 should provide enough suction while the 4" will be big enough so there won't be any restriction going into the seperator.

has any one hooked the seperator to a DW734 planner yet, after many days of looking at plumbing fittings i am still confused on what to use, i really don't have a concern about the hose size of the hose from my 6 gal wet/dry vac (2 1/2 "), but the collector on the DW734 is different than the DW735 planer, the end of the collector has a reducer going from 4" down to 2 1/2". I want to take the dryer vent from the collector (without the reducer) to the intake of the seperator, at which point it looks like 3" sch40 fittings might work as the 4" dryer hose will fit snug over the 3" schedule 40 fitting has any one tried this yet, will the dryer vent hose hold up.
