Thien Cyclone Separator Lid Discussion / auto shut off
February 26, 2015, 04:21:52 PM
i know enough about electricity to make things dangerous. but im playing with the idea of a photo eye inside the trash can for an auto shut off.
saw this video on amazon and since it has a pot and can be tailored to the light i thought it could control the motor. like i said i dont know $#!&. but i would like some input on auto shut off ideas.

wow its been 3yrs since i built my top hat like retired2 design (built at same time). i have never had to empty the plastic bag on the bottom of my 50-850 which also has a baffle and large donut with 7" hole (to mount filter). i just looked at my filter and bag today ( the temp is @45 today) since its enclosed in a cabinet and its buried back in the corner (top hat is exposed) and there is less than a double handfull of fines in bag. pulled the filter off and knocked out about 1/2 a cup that has been collecting in filter for the past yr and a half.  this tophat rocks thx phil and retired2 and all the others who have tweaked this system.

Thien Cyclone Separator Lid Discussion / this thing sux

I have a tophat like retired and after running 150 bf of hard maple thru the ,jointer, planner, and sander this is what I ended up in the bag of the Delta 50-850. I also went thru 5 bags of chips. I also have a baffle inside the delta
all that is in the bag is fines (2.5 cups). There is no chips only fine dust

my 220v dc was working good then i restarted it again and it popped the factory breaker after about a 45 second run time, the case of the motor was very hot, i let it cool down for an hr and it tripped the breaker again. right now it is stripped down to the factory filter ring hub and it still pops the breaker. any ideas i checked all the connections and they are good, i have a very bad feeling that it bit the dust

i was wondering if it would be practical to place a  "Y" diverter  between the blower and the factory bag/filter housing so i would be able to blow out fumes or fine dust or even carbon monoxide outside the shop yet still be able to flip the valve and keep the heat in the shop or reduce the wear and tear on the filter and not have to check the bag as much.

Thien Cyclone Separator Lid Discussion / sealing the lid
February 13, 2009, 09:36:48 AM
what have you found to b the best material to use to seal the top to the can. would it b better to do it on the bottom of the top piece or on the edge of the smaller top pcs. i was thinking about a piece of surgical tubing maybe in the corner (make a rabbit or dado) between the two pcs of ply or make the top just a wee bit bigger and going around the outside of can with some tubing and a staple gun.

i saw that in a post back in the early JAN. a guy (gldnbrew) modified  his jet dc with your separator. what i want to know would that be piratical along with using a can system using 6" connectors. the more i read in bill's site i might have done the wrong thing by removing that 4" restriction plate but i will be able to replace it if i draw to many amps (so we'll c). so if i were to place one of your separators in the DC itself as that other guy did would i need to go with a filter or would the 1 micron bag still be ok or would it restrict airflow to much, which i think would allow more dust to drop out of the air and still cause enough back pressure so i could run this without that plate. dave

Thien Cyclone Separator Lid Discussion / confused
January 20, 2009, 09:08:34 PM
i want to build one of the baffles in a can to work with my delta 50-850
but i also want to replace all my 4" pvc duct with 6" sch20 pvc as close to the machine as i can get and then run 4" to the tool. i cant find an adapter to replace the 2 4"y's at the housing on the DC. is there such a beast or do i need to make one. if i were to use a large white plastic drum (maybe 55 gal.) with 6" going in on the side of can and 6" coming out from the ctr of lid, do i still keep the 1.125 gap between the can and baffle or do i need to change the size and make it a little wider. i still have my metal trash can that i was using with a woodstock lid (which is a joke) or should i make a lid with 6" holes and use the trash can (which is kinda on the small size). since there is lots of snow on the ground rt now would be the best time to redo the shop so i can enjoy it in the summer.
