Please help with my question - I am building a DC system with 6" PVC and have a small steel barrel of about 17" diameter. 3HP blower on system.   With a 6"  side inlet and a 6" outlet on top, will the top hat have enough size - diameter - to operate properly??  Or should I consider getting a somewhat larger drum to build the top hat for?

also, if I stick with the 17" drum, how tall should the top hat be?

Hi,

I have a few questions similar to the one below, but different details.   I'm building a side inlet top hat for a steel drum.  Drum dia. is 17" x 25" high.  6" duct work going in the side and out the top.  3HP motor, blower (Griz.) .

The outlet duct goes straight up to the attic of the shop where the DC is located.   

What is the best size for the top hat?   Using 3/4 plywood material for the top hat bottom and top, with polycarb sidewall.  If I make the top about 22" diameter it will give me about a 2.5" overhang on the top.

Should the unit height be twice the inlet diameter? 

Just looking to get general demensions before I start to lay out the design on the material.

I'm new here, looking to build a top hat Thine separator for my new shop.   Don't have a DC system yet, need to design and build  a system for my new shop.  Looking to meet woodworkers in CT.

I'm designing a DC system for my new shop.  24'x24' garage with attic.  Would like to put the motor/blower upstairs and run the duct down thru the ceiling into the shop.  Put a top hat on a drum separator in the shop downstairs and run all feeds into  the main line which goes into the side of the top hat and outlet running out the top to the attic. Have 6" PVC pipe and connections.  Thinking a 2 or 3HP blower would be good, but as a rookie have several questions.

1. Would the placement of the blower in the attic hurt the efficiency of air flow? I like the idea of the blower in the attic to keep the noise low, and not use shop space.

2. Using 6" PVC ducting should be good, but how big must the top hat be for that size? What size drum is best for this set up?

3.  Will 2 or 3 HP be enough power for my shop? (have 220 in shop) I only run one machine at a time.  Cabinet  saw, band saw, jointer, miter saw, etc.
