dust / chip collection

wonderful exchange of info! my question: which method is best for chip collection -which is best for dust collection- has anybody combined the two?  My situation-shop vac to be used ONLY one machine at a time-- planer , jointer (chips) ------radial arm saw ,table saw , belt/disc sander (dust) so far it appears to me that for CHIPS a barrel + lid with diverter or thiel device then to   shop vac and for DUST - a barrel+ cyclone then to shop vac SEEMS to be the route to go BUT I  don't KNOW and $ are scarce---any and all suggestions greatly appreciated thnx Gordo B
