Would a square drop box work?

Hi
I am in the process of revising my workshop dust collection and will be constructing a top hat thien separator to work with my record DX4000 extractor.
I would like to build a drop box for the separator which would be square or rectangular because:
1/ it's cheap
2/ it's strong (seen a few too many pictures of crushed drums on the forums)
3/ it's going to fit my space saving design perfectly

So the question is, does a top hat thien separator require a drop box of circular design (like a drum) to work? I know the cyclone can work with a rectangular or square drop box, but am not sure about the thien.

Not an expert here by any means..  but my suspicions on the topic would be:

  • CON: Circles are stronger than squares
  • PRO: A square would slow the air below the drop slot, which i would think is a good thing
There, a tie for your pro/con list.  Hows that for helping!?!

Thanks widgetninja
They are some interesting observations and you may be right.
Maybe unless some more learned person offers their sage advice it might be a case of build it and then suck it and see. ;)
