Thien Cyclone Separator Lid Discussion / auto shut off
February 26, 2015, 04:21:52 PM
i know enough about electricity to make things dangerous. but im playing with the idea of a photo eye inside the trash can for an auto shut off.
saw this video on amazon and since it has a pot and can be tailored to the light i thought it could control the motor. like i said i dont know $#!&. but i would like some input on auto shut off ideas.

kerry id build a top like retired2 top had design. use that as a first stage and then run that blower outlet to the delta 850 ring. i also installed a Thien baffle in my ring. on the top side of ring i turned on lathe a huge tapered plug to fit into ring so filter would have a place to seal. i think a made the center hole 7" and extended it down below the original opening so i ended up around 2" above baffle. check out this

theses are early pic rt after i built my top hat.motor and tophat are on one side of door and my 50-850 ring and filter/bag are enclosed in a cabinet on other side of door the top of cabinet is open. since then ive added a screw jack under can and some pink foam around motor/tophat supports plus i moved my framed decimal chart in front of motor/TH now its really quiet. having the filter/bag in the cabinet is no big deal over the yrs i only have a tiny amount of dust in bag(maybe a quart)my 50-850 frame is elevated on platform and panels are on z clips. when i built it i put french cleats on outside of panels but ive never used them cuz that corner of shop is buried behind in junk

i hear ya. i did 20 yrs as a carpenter. my worst time was with makore wood, and everybody on the job site was also affected by the dust

when its in the down position the can sits on raised section where handles are "C". there are 3 little rabbited wedge shaped blocks attached to circumference of tophat as it rises the 2" the little guide blocks guide can in to tophat

i just used an old screw jack. when its down ply rests on white box. plywood is captured between 4 pipes and on the top end is a "C" shaped piece of ply that guides and supports the can

just use tempered hardboard and bevel the lower side of slot. i never used a support under mine.

you might look at this post  i made one when i had a cheep can but i switched to a brute and removed the valve when i redid the pipes.

here is a quote from you "I'm not sure how many times I've emptied my drum since I built the top hat, but I know I will never have to empty the plastic bag under the filter in my life time.  There might be a cup full of fines in there now."
think you cursed yourself. im just wondering why you would want to plane green wet wood i think resaw would have been the way to go till it dried next yr.

you could get any drafting book and find info on how to make one yourself.
or
http://www.billpentz.com/Woodworking/Cyclone/ducting.cfm#fittings
has some info @middle of page.
i used an old drafting book when i made mine. i used cardboard at first to work out the bugs (more beer) then welded up the metal one. i used an old mouse pad for the gasket between top hat and fitting.

12 bucks for a 30 pak, saving a buck anyway i can. if the dust don't get me my liver will for sure.

these are the ones i made from 16ga sheet metal compiled from different ones i saw on the NET. along with my pattern all based on a 30-60-90 triangle. just measure the base of saw and opening of saw bottom then use the triangle and start pounding brews to get cardboard, its not rocket science
