I'll be dawg gone if this is the most simple and amazing mods I have ever done. I have a grizzly 2hp single stage DC and was inches from buying a Oneida Super Dust Deputy for 300 smackers. I decided to instead modify it with the baffle using the metal barrel that the two dust bags connect to.

I followed the instructions and moved the blower to after the baffle. Bought a standard steel garbage can from HD and made a simple adaptor to fit the barrel from the DC to fit (the can is bigger than the barrel). I fired it up and stuck the hose in my little shop vac which was filled with MDF dust. I saw one little puf out the exaust but nothing else. Sure enough, all of the dirt and dust is in the can.

Instead of Buying a big filter for the exaust, I just made a box that fit a standard House heater filter. I'm going to buy one of those electrostatic filters soon and use that.

I'll post some photos very soon (looking for my USB cable for my camera.

I AM SOOO GLAD I DID THIS. for about 30 bucks I have exactly what I wanted
Thanks

Some more info:
I followed the sizing based on the pics from here:
http://www.jpthien.com/jpthien/cy.htm
I was using the same garbage can Phil had and I really didn't want to get into a whole scientific hoopla about it, I just started cutting circles :) I was kinda skeptical so I was "roughing" it. I really thought I was going end up buying the Dust Buddy.... too funny.

I cobbled together a quick circle jig and made the large circle then moved the router in by 1 1/2" inches and made the slot. I made the Slot 1 1/2" instead of 1 1/4" as Phil spec'd. I didn't even measure out the amount of degrees to cut the slot, I just made a "Pie" on the large circle and divided it up to "about" 240 degrees...

As far as where to vertically position the baffle, I put it just a hair below the input duct opening.
I left about an inch of full circle behind the input duct (based on the side shot that Phil had).

I didn't add any extra sheet metal "Flaps" or stuff in the barrel, just the baffle on the bottom and a cap on the top with a 5" fitting

The adaptor ring I made allows the barrel to sit on the garbage can. It's just a big MDF donut with two round dadoes, one the Diameter of the can and one the diameter of the barrel. (I found my USB cable so I'll throw some pics up).

I've decided to just vent the exhaust directly outside of my garage since there's almost no dust that comes out and it's a little less noise.

So I guess the lesson here is that you don't even have to get super accurate about it and it still works, really really well...

hope this helps

You got pics of that? I am confused and simply cannot picture what you are talking about.

You can get an idea of what he started with here  http://grizzly.com/products/category.aspx?key=25  It's the 2hp.. Cut a donut to mount the motor/blower assy. to the top of the collector. Put a baffle inside the collector. Cut a donut to put the collector on top of a trash can. Add an exaust filter, or duct it outside.

The exsisting "funnel shaped donut" inside my Reliant will have to be removed; it's below the intake. I've got a 55 gal. drum w/ a locking cover. I plan on cutting an opening sized to my collector (19" dia.) except for 120 deg.s, leaving the baffle still attached to the cover. I'll just need to cut the donut to mount the blower on top of the collector. As soon as a permanant home is found, I'll mount it so it will rise an inch to pull out the barrell.

I'll try to take progress pic.s.

Here are some shots showing the barrel and the baffle inside.

Hi Guys I have been doing alot of research about DC's and I Still have alot to learn but I feel that I have found a setup that would work. Here's what I have, A Jet 1100 Here's the link to the site:

http://www.waltermeier.com/us/manufacturing/en/product_jet.html?node=330&product=718

My other lareger problem is that I don't have much space, The work space of my shop is about 19 x 12. Waht I am curious about is will this setup that is shown above work with a 55 gal. Drum and the Jet 1100 all in conjunction with the Thien Cyclone. I do have a few maore questions about the physical construction of the Thien Cyclone but I will deal with that later.

I am stunned, okay baffled (pun intended...).

I have seen some DC mods before, and done a few myself, but that is just remarkable... How did you even come up with the concept?

A couple of questions...

#1. What size flex line did you run between the, well where the top bag usually goes and the inlet of the impeller housing? And if it is 5"...

#2. Where'd you get it?

At the point of what you did, you no longer really need the inlet ring anyway. Just a  side inlet Thien on a big trash can or a barrel / drum. The center going straight to your impeller housing, and blowing straight outside...

If you shorten that hose / eliminate the inlet ring, you will buy yourself some very usable space underneath the unit...

I was wondering if somebody could respond to my questions that I have about wether it will work with some of the ideas I have.

How well does your filter set up work? I have the same DC and will be building a similar conversion soon. I'm considering either blowing the exhaust outside or building a filter box of some kind.

Post a new thread and go for it...

Hmmm , Ive been thinking of up gradeing to a 1hp Grizzly myself, but , the shop vac system works
so well !
but Im thinking with the smaller dia fittings im getting a restriction in the flow, not much - but enough.

BIGGER IS BETTER RIGHT  ;D

TIMMYG

so I've been using my little mutant DC now for about a month and have decided that my Home brewed Filter box "could" work better if I wanted to spend a little more time sealing things up and maybe add a high end Electro-static filter. However, there is just soo little stuff coming out of the exaust end that I'm just going to blow off the whole filter box thing and vent it outside which will save some space and cut down on the noise.

Once the pipe is outside I'm thinking of taking a length of 6" pipe and either drill a bunch of holes or maybe cut a slot in it to defuse the exaust. or maybe just stuff the pipe outside and forget about it. either way, I'll post somepics to show what I mean

It's true I really don't need the ring anymore, I could just do the baffle in the garbage can it'self, But truth be told, the ring makes so doggone simple (Just add the baffle) and it worked soo damn good right from the get go that it just seemed like a natural progression

Thank you. I wish I could take credit but I did see it on another page and just kinda put it all together based on Phils pictures.
It is a 5" flange that I bought from Home depot.

  Hey Timmy G

You cut the ring out of the original DC ????? I'm almost done making mine. Will post pics soon.
